In this work, the artist explores the human form through a lens influenced by the Cubist movement. The composition features two figures, rendered with elongated features and simplified, angular planes that define their facial structures and postures.

Zadkine employs a muted palette, relying on shades of olive green, cream, and deep brown to establish a sense of atmospheric depth. The figure in the foreground holds a fan, an object that serves to break the verticality of the composition while introducing a sharp, rhythmic element to the otherwise fluid lines of the subjects. The treatment of the faces, with their mask-like quality and almond-shaped eyes, reflects the artist's interest in non-Western art forms and the reduction of the figure to its essential components.

Rather than seeking a realistic depiction, the artist prioritises the relationship between the figures and the surrounding space. The overlapping forms create a sense of intimacy, while the deliberate use of light and shadow across the skin tones provides a structural integrity to the image. The brushwork remains controlled, allowing the underlying drawing to guide the viewer's eye across the surface. This piece offers a clear view into the stylistic preoccupations of an artist who spent his career reconciling the physical weight of sculpture with the graphic potential of painting and drawing. It remains a characteristic example of his mid-century approach to portraiture, where the human subject is transformed into a series of balanced, interconnected shapes.

You might also like

Young Woman in a Small Ruff by Amedeo Modigliani
Spanish Woman by Francis Picabia
Ossip Zadkine artwork →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Couple-to-the-Range_Poster_CompositorV1_1792128980044.jpg?v=1792297985
