Alberto Burri, a physician turned artist, is recognised for his rejection of traditional painterly techniques in favour of material exploration. His practice often involved the use of unconventional substances, such as burlap, tar, and discarded industrial materials, which he manipulated to create surfaces that possess a physical presence.

In this specific composition, the artist employs a minimalist approach. Fine, linear marks traverse the off-white ground, creating a sense of tension and spatial organisation. These lines act as a framework, guiding the eye across the surface. A singular, textured form occupies the right side of the frame, providing a contrast to the surrounding negative space. The application of colour is restrained, with muted tones and a touch of ochre, which draws attention to the tactile quality of the medium. The work avoids representational imagery, focusing instead on the relationship between line, form, and the texture of the paper itself.

Burri's approach to abstraction is rooted in the aftermath of the Second World War, reflecting a period of reconstruction and re-evaluation of artistic language. By stripping away narrative elements, he invites the viewer to engage directly with the material reality of the object. This piece demonstrates his ability to balance precision with a raw, unrefined aesthetic. It is a clear example of his interest in the structural properties of his materials, where the act of making is as visible as the final result. The composition remains balanced despite its apparent spontaneity, showing the deliberate nature of his creative process.

You might also like

Presenza attiva by Galliano Mazzon
Le Phare by Nicolas de Staël

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Cover-for-17-variazioni-su-temi-proposti-per-una-pura-ideologia-fonetica_Poster_CompositorV1_1792114906778.jpg?v=1792135813
https://www.solisprints.com/products/cover-for-17-variazioni-su-temi-proposti-per-una-pura-ideologia-fonetica-alberto-burri
