The work displays his characteristic approach to form, where he employs rounded, sculptural volumes to define the human body. The subject sits upon a simple wooden stool, her arms raised behind her head in a gesture of repose. This pose allows Rivera to explore the anatomy of the torso and the weight of the limbs with a focus on physical presence.

The composition is direct and unadorned. Rivera uses a dark, atmospheric background that pushes the figure forward, creating a sense of isolation and quietude. His palette consists of warm, earthy tones for the skin, contrasted against the cool blue of the cushion and the deep shadows surrounding the subject. The paint application is controlled, favouring smooth transitions that emphasise the solidity of the figure rather than expressive brushwork.

Rivera often drew inspiration from the indigenous cultures of Mexico and the everyday lives of its people. In this painting, he avoids the grand narrative scale of his public murals, opting instead for an intimate, observational study. The figure possesses a grounded quality, reflecting the artist's interest in the monumental nature of the human form. By stripping away extraneous detail, he directs the viewer's attention to the posture and the quiet gravity of the moment. This piece offers a clear look at his technical mastery of oil paint and his ability to convey character through physical stance alone. It remains a representative example of his studio practice during the late 1930s, a period when he continued to refine his figurative style while balancing his political and social engagements.

You might also like

Woman at the Fountain by Henri Matisse
Portrait of Ahko by Arshile Gorky
More by Diego Rivera →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Dancer-Resting_Poster_CompositorV1_1792118259867.jpg?v=1792142144
