In this interpretation of Dante and Vergil in the Underworld, the artist moves away from traditional narrative representation. Instead, he focuses on the emotional weight of the subject through a heavy, gestural application of paint. The composition is dominated by dark, atmospheric tones that suggest the descent into the infernal regions.

Weie employs a palette of deep ochres, muddy greens, and bruised purples to construct the scene. The figures of Dante and Vergil are not clearly delineated, but rather suggested through the movement of colour and form. Vertical drips of paint run down the surface of the canvas, adding a sense of instability and decay to the environment. This technique creates a sense of depth that feels psychological rather than spatial.

His approach to this classical subject reflects his interest in the expressive potential of colour. Weie was known for his analytical approach to the act of painting, often reworking his canvases to achieve a specific tonal balance. The work avoids the clarity of academic art, preferring a subjective, internalised vision of the literary source material. By stripping away the literal details of the journey, Weie invites the viewer to engage with the mood of the underworld, rather than its specific geography. This piece is representative of his later period, where his style became increasingly abstract and focused on the materiality of the medium itself. The result is a work that feels both archaic and modern, capturing the tension between the classical tradition and the experimental impulses of his time.

You might also like

Zunoqua of the Cat Village by Emily Carr
Nachtvis (Night Fish) by Lucebert
More by Edvard Weie →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Dante-and-Vergil-in-the-Underworld_Poster_CompositorV1_1792122515602.jpg?v=1792209789
