The work dates to 1840-1841 and is executed in the style of nineteenth-century European engraving. The central figure wears a top hat, a waistcoat, and a cravat, suggesting a formal or professional attire for his role. His posture is upright, with one hand resting on his hip and the other gesturing towards the water, indicating his command of the boat.

The background provides a glimpse of a Dutch-style waterway, complete with distant windmills on the horizon. The artist employs cross-hatching and fine line work to create texture in the clothing and the wooden planks of the deck. The sky is rendered with subtle tonal variations, suggesting an overcast day. The composition is contained within a vignette, focusing the viewer's attention entirely on the ferryman and his immediate surroundings.

Henry Brown captures the character of the subject through precise detailing of the facial features and the folds of the fabric. The inclusion of a small bucket and a coil of rope on the deck adds a sense of realism to the scene, grounding the figure in his daily occupation. This print reflects the period's interest in documenting various trades and social types through graphic media. The technical execution demonstrates a high level of control over the etching process, particularly in the rendering of light and shadow across the figure's form. It provides a clear view of the aesthetic conventions prevalent in mid-nineteenth-century printmaking, where clarity of line and narrative detail were prioritised.

You might also like

Miss Ann Elliott, Beaufort, South Carolina - Thomas Sully — Thomas Sully
Que viene el Coco - Francisco de Goya — Francisco de Goya

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/De-veerschipper-The-Ferryman-_Poster_CompositorV1_1791785609064.jpg?v=1791786648
