delaware-gap-franz-kline
Delaware Gap - Franz Kline

A powerful example of Abstract Expressionism, this 1958 work by Franz Kline features bold, gestural black strokes against a stark white background.

Delaware Gap, painted by Franz Kline in 1958, represents the artist's mature approach to the gestural abstraction that defined his career. Kline is recognised for his large-scale works that utilise a restricted palette of black and white. This piece demonstrates his method of applying paint with broad, forceful brushstrokes, creating a tension between the dark forms and the negative space of the white background.

Unlike many of his contemporaries who focused on fluid, automatic mark-making, Kline often prepared his compositions through small sketches on telephone book pages. These studies allowed him to experiment with the structural balance of his forms before scaling them to larger canvases. In Delaware Gap, the heavy, angular black shapes suggest a sense of architectural weight and physical presence. The composition avoids traditional representation, yet the title evokes a specific geographical location, hinting at the artist's interest in the intersection of industrial forms and natural structures.

The application of paint is direct and unadorned. One can observe the texture of the brush, the speed of the stroke, and the layering of pigment. The white areas are not merely empty space; they function as active components of the composition, pushing against the black masses to create a sense of depth and movement. Kline's work from this period is often associated with the energy of New York City, reflecting the scale and rhythm of urban environments. By stripping away colour and representational detail, he directs the viewer's attention to the physical act of painting and the relationship between positive and negative space. This print captures the raw energy and graphic clarity of the original oil painting, offering a clear view of the artist's technique and his command of form.

You might also like

Number 14 by Jackson Pollock
Drawing [D182] by Morris Louis
Franz Kline artwork →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Delaware-Gap_Poster_CompositorV1_1792122260638.jpg?v=1792207658
