This etching captures the narrow, shadowed confines of La Rue Notre Dame, a subject he returned to frequently during his periods of residence in the town. The composition relies on the stark contrast between the dark, looming silhouettes of the flanking buildings and the luminous, atmospheric space of the street leading toward the church in the distance.

Sickert employs a technique that prioritises tonal weight over fine detail. The heavy, cross-hatched lines define the architecture, creating a sense of mass and enclosure. By obscuring the finer features of the facades, he directs the viewer toward the play of light and shadow within the urban canyon. The figures at the bottom right are rendered with minimal strokes, providing a sense of scale and human presence without distracting from the architectural geometry.

This work reflects Sickert's interest in the mundane aspects of urban life, a theme he explored throughout his career. Unlike the idealised views of French towns produced by many of his contemporaries, this print focuses on the gritty, lived-in reality of the street. The etching process allows for a moody, atmospheric quality that suits the subject matter, capturing the damp, grey light characteristic of the Normandy coast. It is an exercise in restraint, where the artist uses the limitations of the medium to convey the specific character of a place. The print demonstrates his ability to find visual interest in the ordinary, transforming a simple street view into a study of light, volume, and perspective.

You might also like

Rue de Rivoli by Edvard Munch
Morning in Paris by Pierre Bonnard
More by Walter Sickert →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Dieppe-La-Rue-Notre-Dame_Poster_CompositorV1_1792128906797.jpg?v=1792297505
