This etching, titled Drie honden, demonstrates his ability to capture the texture of fur and the distinct postures of his subjects. The composition features three dogs arranged in a naturalistic grouping: one seated in profile, one facing forward, and one resting in the foreground. The use of varied line weights allows the artist to define the soft coats of the animals against a lightly sketched, open background.

Quadal spent much of his career travelling across Europe, including periods in London, Vienna, and St Petersburg. His work often reflects the eighteenth-century interest in natural history and the observation of domestic animals. The etching process here is clean and deliberate, with cross-hatching used sparingly to suggest shadow and volume without overwhelming the paper surface. The background remains minimal, consisting of light clouds and sparse vegetation, which keeps the focus entirely on the dogs. This approach is characteristic of his graphic work, where the priority is the accurate representation of form and anatomy.

As a print, this piece offers a glimpse into the observational practices of the era. The dogs appear relaxed, suggesting a quiet moment of rest. The artist's signature, M. F. Quadal fec., is visible in the lower left corner, indicating his direct involvement in the production of the plate. This fine art print is produced on high-quality archival paper, preserving the delicate tonal variations of the original etching. It is a suitable choice for those interested in historical animal studies or the technical development of European printmaking during the late eighteenth century.

You might also like

Neo-classical Vases in a Landscape - Jean Charles Delafosse — Jean Charles Delafosse
A Grecian Lovely - John William Godward — John William Godward

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Drie-honden-Three-Dogs-_Poster_CompositorV1_1791861941610.jpg?v=1791863041
