The composition is divided into four equal quadrants, each containing a series of nested squares that recede towards a central point. This arrangement creates a sense of depth through the manipulation of colour values rather than traditional perspective.

Vasarely utilised a systematic approach to colour, where each quadrant explores a specific hue range: green, red, yellow-orange, and violet. By modulating the saturation and brightness of these colours from the outer edges to the centre, he induces a kinetic effect for the viewer. The eye perceives a subtle vibration or pulsation, a hallmark of his optical investigations during the mid-twentieth century. His work often sought to remove the hand of the artist, favouring a precise, mathematical execution that could be replicated across various media.

This piece reflects the artist's interest in the 'plastic alphabet', a system he developed to create universal visual languages through basic geometric forms. By limiting his palette and structure, Vasarely forced an engagement with the mechanics of human perception. The squares do not merely exist as static shapes: they function as tools for exploring how light and colour interact within the field of vision. The work remains a clear example of his rigorous methodology, where the relationship between the individual parts and the whole is calculated to produce a specific optical response. It avoids representational imagery entirely, focusing instead on the pure interaction of colour and form within a grid-based framework.

You might also like

Helles Zentrum by Max Bill
Komposition in Schwarz und Weiß by Otto Freundlich
More by Victor Vasarely →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/DVA-DVA_Poster_CompositorV1_1792123013414.jpg?v=1792287241
