eend-duck-reijer-stolk
Eend (Duck) - Reijer Stolk

A minimalist woodcut print by Dutch artist Reijer Stolk, featuring a duck rendered with precise, graphic lines against a deep green background.

Reijer Stolk, a Dutch artist active during the early twentieth century, produced this woodcut print titled Eend (Duck). The work demonstrates a clear engagement with the aesthetic principles of the period, favouring simplified forms and a deliberate reduction of visual information. Stolk focuses on the singular subject of a duck, rendered from an aerial perspective against a solid, textured block of deep green ink.

The composition is notable for its economy. By placing the bird within a square field of colour, Stolk creates a sense of stillness. The plumage of the duck is articulated through precise, repetitive white lines that suggest the texture of feathers without resorting to excessive detail. This approach reflects a broader interest in graphic clarity, where the interaction between the negative space of the paper and the printed ink defines the subject.

The print exhibits the tactile qualities inherent to the woodcut medium. The grain of the block and the pressure of the press are visible in the subtle variations across the green background. This technical honesty is a hallmark of Stolk's graphic output. The work avoids narrative or environmental context, choosing instead to present the animal as a formal element. The contrast between the organic, curved lines of the duck and the rigid, geometric boundary of the print area creates a balanced visual tension.

This piece is representative of the artist's ability to distil natural subjects into their essential graphic components. It functions as a study of form and pattern, demonstrating how minimal intervention can produce a coherent image. The muted colour palette, consisting of earthy tones and deep green, aligns with the printmaking traditions of the era, where the focus remained on the interplay of line, shape, and ink density.

You might also like

Eend (Duck) - Julie de Graag — Julie de Graag
Sneeuwuil (Snowy Owl) - Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita — Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Eend-Duck-_Poster_CompositorV1_1791898388251.jpg?v=1791898516
