ehon-genji-monogatari-terai-shosen
Ehon Genji Monogatari - Terai Shosen

A refined woodblock print from an illustrated edition of the Tale of Genji, featuring figures in a traditional interior setting.

This woodblock print originates from an illustrated edition of the Tale of Genji, a classic work of Japanese literature. Terai Shosen provides a visual interpretation of the narrative, capturing a quiet domestic scene within an aristocratic household. The composition employs a traditional Japanese perspective, where the viewer looks down upon the figures from an elevated angle. This technique allows for the inclusion of architectural details, such as the sliding screens and tatami mats, which define the interior space.

The figures are rendered with precise, thin lines that define their posture and the folds of their robes. The male figure, positioned in the foreground, is engaged with a manuscript, while a second figure sits nearby. The inclusion of calligraphic text integrated into the composition is a hallmark of this genre, where image and word function in tandem to convey the story. The print reflects the aesthetic values of the Edo period, prioritising clarity of form and a balanced arrangement of elements across the two-page spread.

Technically, the work demonstrates the skill of the woodblock carver in maintaining consistent line weight across the paper. The absence of colour focuses the viewer on the composition and the interaction between the characters. Such prints were produced to make classical literature accessible to a wider audience, serving as both a narrative aid and an object of visual appreciation. The restraint in the design, combined with the careful placement of the figures, creates a sense of stillness. This print offers a glimpse into the historical interpretation of courtly life, presented through the lens of seventeenth-century Japanese printmaking traditions.

You might also like

Sarutahiko from The Cave Door of Spring - Totoya Hokkei — Totoya Hokkei
Nakayama Nanshi II as Otani - Gosōtei Hirosada — Konishi Hirosada

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Ehon-Genji-Monogatari_Poster_CompositorV1_1791531258198.jpg?v=1791532274
