end-of-the-year-eishosai-choki
End of the Year - Eishōsai Chōki

A woodblock print by Eishōsai Chōki depicting figures preparing for the end of the year, rendered in the distinct style of the late Edo period.

This woodblock print by Eishōsai Chōki depicts a scene from the series 'Seirō niwaka nenju gyōji' (Annual Events of the Pleasure Quarters). The work captures a group of figures engaged in the preparations for the end of the year, a period traditionally associated with cleaning, settling debts, and preparing for the arrival of the New Year. The figures are dressed in patterned kimonos, their forms rendered with the elongated proportions characteristic of Chōki's style.

The composition is balanced, with the figures arranged in a cluster that suggests movement and interaction. The artist employs a muted palette, relying on soft reds, greys, and earthy tones to define the garments and the surrounding objects. The use of line is precise, delineating the folds of the fabric and the facial features of the subjects with clarity. The background remains minimal, allowing the focus to remain on the figures and their specific attire, which includes items associated with the seasonal festivities.

Eishōsai Chōki was active during the late 18th century and is recognised for his contributions to the ukiyo-e genre, particularly his depictions of women and actors. His work often features a distinct sense of melancholy or introspection, which sets his prints apart from the more exuberant styles of his contemporaries. This print provides a glimpse into the social customs of the Edo period, documenting the attire and activities of those within the pleasure districts. The inclusion of text at the top of the print serves to identify the series and the specific event being portrayed. The print is a fine example of the technical skill involved in multi-block printing, where each colour is applied using a separate carved block to achieve the final image.

You might also like

Ladies Surrounding a Cart - Utamaro II — Utamaro II
A Party of Merrymakers in a House in the Yoshiwara on a Moonlight Night - Kitagawa Utamaro — Kitagawa Utamaro

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/End-of-the-Year_Poster_CompositorV1_1791601920172.jpg?v=1791602959
