enid-and-geraint-arthur-hughes
Enid and Geraint - Arthur Hughes

A Pre-Raphaelite depiction of the Arthurian couple Enid and Geraint, captured in a quiet, detailed woodland setting by Arthur Hughes.

Arthur Hughes, a painter associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, produced this work during a period of intense interest in Arthurian legend. The subject is drawn from the Mabinogion, specifically the tale of Geraint and Enid, which also appeared in Alfred Lord Tennyson's Idylls of the King. The composition depicts the two figures resting in a woodland setting, a common motif in Hughes's oeuvre that allows for the meticulous rendering of natural details.

The painting displays the characteristic Pre-Raphaelite attention to surface texture and colour. The deep crimson of the garments contrasts with the verdant greens of the forest floor, where small wildflowers are painted with botanical precision. Enid, with her auburn hair, rests against a tree trunk while Geraint watches over her, his hand resting near his sword. The arched top of the canvas suggests its original purpose as a decorative panel or a work intended for a specific architectural space.

Hughes was known for his focus on emotional intimacy and the psychological state of his subjects. Unlike some of his contemporaries who favoured grand historical drama, Hughes often chose moments of quiet reflection. The soft light filtering through the trees creates a sense of stillness, drawing the viewer into the private world of the couple. The inclusion of the lute in the foreground adds a layer of musical symbolism, often used in Victorian art to represent harmony or the romantic nature of the scene. This print captures the fine brushwork and the specific palette that defined Hughes's contribution to the movement, offering a clear view of the technical skill he applied to his literary subjects.

You might also like

Claudio and Isabella by William Holman Hunt
Mariana by John Everett Millais

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Enid-and-Geraint_Poster_CompositorV1_1792123264621.jpg?v=1792290066
