Produced in 1895, the work demonstrates the artist's mastery of the lithographic medium, a technique he utilised to bridge the gap between fine art and commercial illustration. The composition features two figures gazing upward at a night sky, where a single star streaks across the darkness. The moon is depicted as a simple, stark circle, providing a contrast to the textured, granular application of ink that defines the background.

Toulouse-Lautrec employs a distinct style of mark-making, using a spatter technique known as crachis to create a sense of atmospheric depth. The figures are rendered with economical, expressive lines that capture their posture and intent. The inclusion of typography as an integrated element of the design reflects the artist's engagement with the Parisian cabaret and music hall culture of the late nineteenth century. The text, detailing the publisher C. Joubert and the contributors, is woven into the lower portion of the print, maintaining the balance of the overall visual field.

As a piece of ephemera, this work provides insight into the intersection of music, literature, and visual art in fin-de-siècle Paris. The artist's ability to convey mood through minimal detail is evident here, as the quiet, observational nature of the scene contrasts with the more boisterous subjects often associated with his posters. This print is a representative example of how commercial commissions allowed artists to experiment with graphic composition and printmaking techniques, reaching a wider audience beyond the gallery space. The work remains a study in the effective use of negative space and the expressive potential of lithographic texture.

You might also like

Reclamekaart voor 'De Kroniek' by Samuel Lankhout & Co.
Theater Programme and Advertisement for La Revue Blanche by Édouard Vuillard

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Etoiles-Filantes_Poster_CompositorV1_1792124530143.jpg?v=1792286474
