This work depicts two figures walking along the riverbank beneath a blossoming cherry tree. The composition balances the human subjects with the natural environment, a hallmark of Hiroshige's approach to the genre. The figures are dressed in patterned kimonos, their forms rendered with clean lines and flat colour fields typical of the period's printing techniques.

The background features the Sumida River, with distant buildings and a soft, golden horizon suggesting the transition from day to night. The cherry tree, with its pink blossoms, frames the upper portion of the print, adding a seasonal element to the scene. Hiroshige employs a muted palette, relying on soft greens, blues, and pinks to evoke the atmosphere of an early evening stroll. The print includes traditional cartouches containing the title and the artist's signature, integrated into the overall design.

This piece captures a quiet moment of daily life in Edo-period Japan. The artist focuses on the interaction between the figures and their surroundings, rather than dramatic action. The print demonstrates the technical precision of the woodblock medium, where each colour is applied via a separate carved block. The paper texture and the subtle variations in ink saturation provide a tactile quality to the image. As a fine art print, this work offers a glimpse into the aesthetic values of 19th-century Japan, where the observation of nature and human activity remained central to artistic practice. The composition remains balanced, with the verticality of the tree trunk providing a counterpoint to the horizontal flow of the river and the distant shoreline.

You might also like

Pleasure Boats on the Sumida River by Katsushika Hokusai
Girls Getting on Board a Boat, from the illustrated book Flowers of the Four Seasons by Kitagawa Utamaro
Utagawa Hiroshige prints →
