This work, part of the series 'Fifteen Variations on a Single Theme', demonstrates his interest in the logical progression of geometric forms. By manipulating polygons and their internal connections, Bill explores how simple linear structures can generate complex visual relationships.

The composition relies on the interaction of overlapping shapes, each defined by distinct, saturated colours. Thin, precise lines connect the vertices of these polygons, creating a web of internal geometry that draws the eye toward the centre of the frame. The layering of these shapes creates a sense of depth, despite the inherently flat nature of the medium. Bill employs a rigorous system of construction, where the placement of every line is determined by the underlying mathematical logic of the series.

As a student at the Bauhaus, Bill absorbed the school's emphasis on clarity and functional design. This influence is evident in the economy of means used here. There is no superfluous detail. The work functions as a visual equation, inviting the viewer to analyse the relationship between the outer boundary and the internal network of lines. The use of high-chroma colours against a stark background ensures that the geometric structure remains the primary focus. This print is an example of Bill's ability to translate abstract mathematical concepts into a visual language that is both disciplined and visually engaging. It reflects his belief that art should be as objective and verifiable as science, providing a clear window into the structural possibilities of pure form.

You might also like

Composite Image: Orange and Pink by Victor Pasmore
Telephone Picture EM 3 by László Moholy-Nagy

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Fifteen-Variations-on-a-Single-Theme-v_Poster_CompositorV1_1792127806313.jpg?v=1792294872
