fin-de-la-guerre-frans-hogenberg
Fin de la guerre - Frans Hogenberg

A detailed 1585 etching by Frans Hogenberg depicting the naval vessel Fin de la guerre during the Siege of Antwerp.

This etching by Frans Hogenberg depicts the vessel known as 'Fin de la guerre', a specialised ship constructed during the Siege of Antwerp in 1585. Hogenberg, a prolific printmaker, documented many military and political events of the sixteenth century, providing a visual record of the Dutch Revolt. The print captures the ship in action, firing its cannons amidst a turbulent sea, with the fortifications of Antwerp visible in the background.

The composition is typical of Hogenberg's documentary style, prioritising clarity and narrative detail over atmospheric perspective. The ship occupies the centre of the frame, its structure rendered with precise lines that delineate the rigging, masts, and gun ports. Smoke billows from the cannons, suggesting the intensity of the naval engagement. Below the image, a German text provides a contemporary account of the ship's role and the context of the conflict, a common feature in Hogenberg's broadsheets which functioned as news media for the period.

As a historical document, this print offers insight into sixteenth-century naval engineering and the tactical innovations employed during the Eighty Years' War. The artist uses a systematic approach to shading and texture, typical of the period's engraving techniques, to differentiate between the wooden hull, the billowing sails, and the choppy water. The inclusion of flags and smaller vessels in the distance adds depth to the scene, placing the primary subject within a broader theatre of war. This work remains a valuable reference for those interested in the history of the Low Countries and the development of early modern print culture.

You might also like

Gezicht op de Thermen van Diocletianus - Hieronymus Cock — Hieronymus Cock
Coat of Arms with an Old Woman Spinning - Master of the Amsterdam Cabinet — Master of the Amsterdam Cabinet

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Fin-de-la-guerre_Poster_CompositorV1_1791771663163.jpg?v=1791772134
