Executed in the late 1890s, the work demonstrates the artist's mastery of the lithographic medium, specifically his ability to manipulate tone and shadow to suggest atmosphere rather than precise detail. Whistler utilised the soft, granular quality of the lithographic crayon to create a sense of flickering light, which gives the portrait its title.

The composition is spare, focusing on the sitter's face and upper torso while allowing the surrounding space to dissolve into gestural, dark marks. This approach reflects the artist's interest in Tonalism, where the arrangement of light and dark values takes precedence over descriptive accuracy. The figure emerges from the paper's surface through subtle gradations of grey and black, suggesting the quiet, intimate environment of a room illuminated by a dying fire. The butterfly monogram, a signature device used by Whistler, is visible on the right side of the print.

Whistler's work in lithography during this period often involved subjects from his immediate circle. By capturing Mrs. Pennell in this manner, he avoids the rigid formality of traditional portraiture. Instead, the print conveys a fleeting moment of observation. The paper itself plays a role in the final image, as the unprinted areas provide the necessary contrast to the dense, charcoal-like strokes of the crayon. This print offers a view into the artist's late career, where his technique became increasingly economical and focused on the evocative power of suggestion.

You might also like

Frau Goeritz by Lovis Corinth
The Nurse - Albert Belleroche by Albert de Belleroche

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Firelight-Mrs_Poster_CompositorV1_1791981635624.jpg?v=1791982048
