The composition relies on the interplay between negative space and subtle ink washes, creating a sense of depth and movement without the need for rigid outlines. The fish are rendered with delicate attention to their scales and fins, while the surrounding water is suggested through soft, sweeping gradients of grey ink.

Shūkō employs the traditional techniques of Nihonga, a style that emerged during the Meiji period to preserve Japanese aesthetic values while incorporating modern sensibilities. The presence of dark, vertical ink strokes provides a structural counterpoint to the gentle curves of the fish, suggesting reeds or submerged branches. This contrast directs the eye across the silk surface, mimicking the natural path of aquatic life.

The artist uses a muted palette, typical of ink-wash traditions, which allows the viewer to focus on the rhythm of the composition. The application of ink on silk requires precision, as the medium is unforgiving and absorbs pigment quickly. Shūkō demonstrates mastery over this material, achieving a balance between the solid forms of the fish and the ethereal quality of the water.

This piece functions as a study of movement and light. By stripping away unnecessary detail, the artist captures the essence of the subject. The work reflects the broader interest in natural observation that characterised late nineteenth-century Japanese art. It is a quiet, contemplative image that avoids decorative excess, favouring a direct engagement with the subject matter. The subtle variations in tone evoke the shifting currents, providing a sense of atmosphere that is both calm and active. The work remains a fine example of the technical skill and observational focus associated with the period.

You might also like

Memory of a Voyage - René Magritte — René Magritte
Nihon hana zue - Ogata Gekko — Ogata Gekko

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Fishes-Swimming_Poster_CompositorV1_1791334772085.jpg?v=1791336841
