The work captures a coastal scene with a focus on the atmospheric conditions of the shoreline. Tanner employs a series of vertical and cross-hatched lines to convey the texture of the rain or mist falling over the harbour. The composition is grounded by the dark, heavy silhouettes of the fishing vessels resting on the mudflats at low tide.

In the background, the simplified forms of buildings suggest a small coastal village. Tanner avoids excessive detail, preferring to use the economy of the etching medium to suggest the mood of the environment. The interplay between the dark ink and the lighter paper creates a sense of depth, drawing the eye from the foreground boats toward the distant, hazy horizon. This piece demonstrates his technical proficiency with the etching needle, where he uses varying pressure and density of lines to establish tonal shifts without the need for wash or colour.

This print offers a glimpse into the artist's interest in the everyday life of the French coast, a subject he explored alongside his more widely recognised religious paintings. The work is devoid of sentimentality, presenting the scene with a direct, observational quality. It is a study in light and shadow, where the physical act of mark-making defines the weather and the time of day. The print is a fine example of early twentieth-century graphic art, reflecting the artist's ability to translate the nuances of a maritime setting into a monochromatic medium.

You might also like

Boats at Anchor - Eugène Boudin — Eugène Louis Boudin
Twee mannen kijken naar voorbij zeilende schepen - Arentsz & Cornelis van der Sys, weduwe Pieter (II) — Arentsz & Cornelis van der Sys, weduwe Pieter (II)

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Fishing-Boats-at-Shore-Brittany_Poster_CompositorV1_1791900886976.jpg?v=1791901018
