The composition focuses on a terracotta pot filled with chives, placed against a backdrop that features decorative, patterned textiles. Van Gogh employs a palette dominated by earthy ochres, terracotta tones, and sharp greens, reflecting his ongoing experimentation with colour theory during his time in France.

The brushwork is deliberate and rhythmic. The chives are rendered with quick, vertical strokes that convey the upward growth of the plant, while the pot is built up with thicker, more textured paint application. The background, which appears to be a patterned fabric, provides a contrast to the organic form of the plant. This work demonstrates the artist's interest in the everyday objects found within his immediate surroundings, elevating a simple kitchen herb to the subject of a formal study.

Van Gogh's approach to this still life shows the influence of Japanese woodblock prints, particularly in the way the space is flattened and the decorative elements are integrated into the composition. The inclusion of a small, detached bunch of chives in the foreground adds a sense of immediacy to the scene. This painting is a clear example of the artist's transition from the darker, more sombre tones of his earlier Dutch period to the lighter, more experimental style he adopted after moving to Paris. The work remains a study in texture and colour, capturing the tactile quality of the clay pot and the fibrous nature of the chives through a series of layered, energetic marks.

You might also like

Still life, Merindol by Mary Fedden
Still Life with Apples by Henri Matisse

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Flowerpot-with-Chives_Poster_CompositorV1_1791999461073.jpg?v=1792000094
