Vasarely, a central figure in the development of Op Art, utilised a rigorous vocabulary of basic shapes, including circles, squares, and triangles, to construct complex optical experiences. In this work, the composition is organised into a grid, where each cell contains a specific geometric form set against a contrasting background colour.

The arrangement of these elements creates a sense of movement and depth, despite the two-dimensional nature of the canvas. Vasarely employed a specific colour theory, pairing saturated hues with muted tones to manipulate how the eye perceives spatial relationships. The dark, linear framing elements that overlay the grid suggest a layered structure, drawing the viewer into the centre of the work. This method of construction reflects the artist's desire to create a universal visual language that could be understood without reliance on traditional representational imagery.

Vasarely often referred to his method as the 'alphabet plastique', a system where a limited set of forms and colours could be combined in infinite variations. Folklore demonstrates this principle through its balanced distribution of shapes and the rhythmic repetition of its colour scheme. The work avoids static composition, instead encouraging the viewer to scan the surface and observe the shifting relationships between the individual cells. By focusing on the mechanics of sight, Vasarely invites an engagement with the physical properties of colour and form. This piece remains a clear example of his mid-career focus on the interaction between mathematical precision and human visual response, stripped of extraneous detail or narrative content.

You might also like

Radiation of Pink by Max Bill
Genève Blanc by Edna Andrade

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Folklore_Poster_CompositorV1_1792117338857.jpg?v=1792140009
