The work depicts the intense labour required to sustain the war effort, focusing on the industrial activity within French munitions factories. McBey captures the physical strain of the workers through dynamic, gestural lines that convey movement and exertion. The composition is dominated by the stark contrast between the dark, heavy machinery and the lighter, strained figures of the labourers.

Technically, the etching demonstrates McBey's mastery of the medium. He employs varied line weights to suggest the heat and atmosphere of the factory floor. The cross-hatching in the background creates a sense of depth and industrial scale, while the foreground figures are rendered with more fluid, expressive strokes. This piece is part of a series documenting the realities of the conflict, moving away from the romanticised depictions often found in earlier war art. Instead, McBey focuses on the repetitive, gruelling nature of industrial production during wartime.

The print reflects the artist's ability to observe and record the human element within a mechanised environment. By choosing to focus on the workers rather than the machinery itself, McBey provides a perspective on the domestic front that is both immediate and visceral. The etching remains a significant example of early twentieth-century printmaking, demonstrating how the medium could be used to convey the atmosphere of industrial labour. The stark black and white palette emphasises the harsh conditions, stripping away unnecessary detail to focus on the essential action of the scene. This work is held in several major collections, including the Imperial War Museum, where it is recognised for its documentary value and technical execution.

You might also like

Waterfront by Joseph Kaplan
The Towers of Oil by Joseph Pennell
James McBey artwork →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/France-at-her-Furnaces_Poster_CompositorV1_1792115365074.jpg?v=1792395324
