The work displays the artist's characteristic approach to subject matter, where everyday objects are reduced to their most basic, graphic forms. Caulfield often employed flat areas of colour and precise, clean lines to remove the emotional weight typically associated with representational painting, allowing the viewer to focus on the formal qualities of the image itself.

The composition features a cigar, rendered in a simplified, almost cartoonish manner, set against a pale yellow, shield-like shape. From the tip of the cigar, plumes of smoke rise in a fan-like arrangement. These plumes are depicted as solid, flat shapes of red and dark brown, rather than the wispy, translucent forms one might expect in a traditional depiction of smoke. The entire motif is placed upon a bold, solid red background, creating a stark contrast that pushes the central elements forward.

Caulfield's work is frequently associated with the Pop Art movement, yet his practice remained distinct due to his rigorous attention to composition and his interest in the history of painting. By isolating a single, mundane object like a cigar, he invites a re-evaluation of how we perceive common items when they are stripped of their context and rendered as pure design. The print demonstrates his ability to balance humour with a disciplined, almost architectural approach to visual space. The lack of texture and the deliberate avoidance of painterly brushwork ensure that the focus remains on the interplay of shape, colour, and negative space. This piece is a clear example of his mid-career style, where he refined his visual language to achieve maximum clarity and impact through minimal means.

You might also like

Untitled (FLS #3028) by Fred Sandback
Vechtende engel by Armando
More by Patrick Caulfield →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Freud-s-Smoke_Poster_CompositorV1_1792119971604.jpg?v=1792198443
