In this lithograph, he depicts Geryon, the giant from Greek mythology known for his triple-bodied form. Zadkine interprets this monstrous figure through a lens of fractured geometry, a hallmark of his engagement with Cubist principles. The composition avoids traditional anatomical realism, opting instead for a synthesis of limbs and torsos that merge into a singular, dynamic entity.

The figure is rendered with calligraphic lines that define the muscular structure while simultaneously breaking it apart. Zadkine uses a muted palette, allowing the focus to remain on the tension within the form. The background is suggested through minimal, sketch-like marks, which prevent the subject from appearing isolated. This approach reflects the artist's interest in the relationship between mass and space, a theme that dominated his sculptural output throughout his career.

Zadkine often utilised mythological subjects to represent internal conflict or physical struggle. By choosing Geryon, he presents a figure defined by its multiplicity, challenging the viewer to reconcile the overlapping parts into a coherent whole. The lithographic medium allows for a softness in the shading that contrasts with the sharp, angular contours of the giant. This print captures the energy of Zadkine's preparatory drawings, where the speed of the hand informs the final structure of the work. It is a study of form in motion, where the mythological narrative provides a framework for formal experimentation. The work remains an example of how twentieth-century artists reinterpreted ancient narratives through modern stylistic vocabularies, prioritising the expressive potential of the line over descriptive accuracy.

You might also like

The Judgment of Paris - Antoine Watteau by Jean-Antoine Watteau
Ixion Deceived by Juno and Jupiter by Pieter van Sompel
More by Ossip Zadkine →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Geryon_Poster_CompositorV1_1792129773314.jpg?v=1792297767
