gezicht-op-de-waard-barriere-te-utrecht-weduwe-huygens
Gezicht op de Waard-Barrière te Utrecht - Weduwe Huygens

A detailed 1857 lithograph depicting the Weerd-Barrière in Utrecht, capturing the city's canal life and architecture during the mid-nineteenth century.

This lithograph, titled Gezicht op de Waard-Barrière te Utrecht, offers a precise topographical record of the city of Utrecht during the mid-nineteenth century. Produced by the firm Weduwe Huygens, the print captures the Weerd-Barrière, a significant entry point to the city, with the iconic Dom Tower rising in the distance. The composition is structured around the canal, which serves as the primary artery for local commerce and transport. Several flat-bottomed barges and smaller rowing boats occupy the water, reflecting the reliance on inland waterways for the movement of goods and people in the Netherlands at this time.

The architectural details are rendered with clarity, showing the fortified appearance of the gatehouse and the surrounding urban structures. The artist employs a tonal range typical of lithography from this period, using soft greys and sepia tones to suggest the atmosphere of a quiet day in the city. The decorative border, featuring foliate motifs in the corners, frames the scene as a formal view intended for collectors of regional history and urban documentation. The text at the top, Utrecht en Omstreken, indicates that this work was part of a larger series documenting the city and its surroundings.

This print provides a window into the urban planning and daily life of Utrecht before the industrial expansions of the late nineteenth century. The inclusion of figures on the bridge and along the quay adds a sense of scale and human presence to the scene. As a historical document, it preserves the appearance of a specific location that has since undergone significant change. The technical execution demonstrates the skill of the lithographic process, balancing the requirements of architectural accuracy with the aesthetic conventions of nineteenth-century printmaking.

You might also like

Haven van Amsterdam met het wachthuis by Johann Jakob Kleinschmidt
Gezicht op het Nieuwe Werkhuis te Amsterdam by Cornelis Brouwer

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Gezicht-op-de-Waard-Barri-re-te-Utrecht_Poster_CompositorV1_1791875563809.jpg?v=1791875768
