Vitale Mascardi provides a detailed bird-eye view of the urban space, capturing the temporary wooden structures erected for the event. The composition is organised around the central arena, where participants on horseback engage in the tournament. Surrounding this space, tiered seating accommodates spectators, while the surrounding Roman architecture provides a sense of scale and location.

The print functions as a historical record of civic spectacle. It includes a legend at the bottom, marked with letters A through X, which identifies specific participants, noble families, and architectural features such as the Palazzo del Duca Gio. Ant. Orsino. The use of line work allows for the inclusion of numerous figures, carriages, and architectural details without cluttering the overall view. The perspective is slightly elevated, allowing the viewer to observe both the activity within the arena and the surrounding city streets.

Technically, the work demonstrates the precision typical of mid-seventeenth-century Italian printmaking. The artist employs varied hatching to differentiate between the textures of the stone buildings, the wooden scaffolding, and the crowds of people. This piece offers a glimpse into the social life of Rome, where public displays of pageantry were common. It serves as a visual archive of the urban environment and the specific cultural practices of the period, documenting the intersection of aristocratic display and public gathering in a major European capital.

You might also like

Veduta de la Vigna di Ludouici - Abraham Bloteling by Abraham Blooteling
S.
