The work is a precise record of a specific event, capturing the urgency and chaos of the night. Hendrik Kobell, a Dutch artist known for his maritime subjects, provides a dramatic view of the water surging through the breached lock. The composition is structured to draw the eye toward the centre, where the white foam of the water contrasts with the dark, stormy sky above.

Groups of onlookers gather on both sides of the canal, their figures illuminated by lanterns. The inclusion of these observers adds a human element to the scene, documenting the public response to the disaster. The architectural details of the surrounding buildings and the masts of ships in the distance provide context for the location. The print was published by the firm of the widow of Jacobus Loveringh and Johannes Allart, reflecting the common practice of the period where publishers commissioned artists to document current events for a public audience.

Technically, the print demonstrates the fine line work characteristic of late eighteenth-century Dutch engraving. The artist uses cross-hatching to build depth and shadow, particularly in the turbulent water and the heavy clouds. The perspective is carefully managed to convey the scale of the flooding relative to the urban environment. This piece functions as a historical document, preserving the visual memory of a specific environmental crisis in the Netherlands. It remains a clear example of how printmaking served as a primary medium for news and public information before the advent of photography.

You might also like

An Accurate View of Amsterdam by Alexander Hogg
Gezicht op de Dorpskerk te Castricum by Hendrik de Leth
Hendrik Kobell prints →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Gezicht-van-de-overstrooming-der-sluis-te-Delfshaven_Poster_CompositorV1_1791877129605.jpg?v=1791877247
https://www.solisprints.com/products/gezicht-van-de-overstrooming-der-sluis-te-delfshaven-hendrik-kobell
