Glimpse Upon Waking captures a characteristic view from her home, where the domestic environment frames the external environment. The composition is dominated by two large, vertical forms that suggest curtains or window frames, rendered in soft white with horizontal bands of ochre and gold. These elements act as a threshold, drawing the eye toward the centre of the canvas.

Beyond this frame, the artist depicts a soft, atmospheric view of the outdoors. The colours are muted, relying on pale blues, whites, and gentle greens to convey the quality of morning light. The brushwork is light and airy, reflecting her interest in the transient nature of light and colour. Nicholson often experimented with the way light filtered through glass or fabric, and this work demonstrates her ability to simplify complex visual information into essential shapes and tones. The painting avoids heavy detail, preferring to suggest the presence of foliage and distant hills through subtle shifts in hue and texture.

This piece reflects the artist's later period, where her work became increasingly concerned with the spiritual and optical properties of colour. By placing the viewer inside the room, looking out, she creates a sense of intimacy and quiet observation. The work does not attempt to document a specific location with photographic precision, but rather to record the sensation of looking at the world upon waking. The balance between the structured, rhythmic patterns of the curtains and the fluid, ethereal quality of the view outside creates a tension that is both calm and engaging.

You might also like

Flowers in front of a Window by Henri Matisse
Vase of Flowers II by Prudence Heward

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Glimpse-Upon-Waking_Poster_CompositorV1_1792118678234.jpg?v=1792142891
