Kihō was a student of the Maruyama school, which favoured a blend of traditional Japanese techniques and observational realism. This specific page offers a glimpse into the domestic life of the Edo period, capturing everyday activities within a humble setting.

The composition is divided into two distinct scenes, a common format for instructional manuals of the era. On the left, a figure is depicted engaged in a routine task, while the right side shows a mother holding a child within a simple structure. The lines are economical and direct, reflecting the purpose of the book as a guide for students to learn the fundamentals of brushwork and figure drawing. The artist uses minimal shading and a restrained colour palette, relying on the clarity of the ink lines to define form and space.

Kihō, active in Kyoto, produced works that often leaned towards the informal and the observational. Unlike the highly stylised prints of the Ukiyo-e masters, this work prioritises a sense of immediacy and simplicity. The figures are rendered with soft, rounded features, and the surrounding environment is suggested through sparse, functional details. The inclusion of everyday objects, such as washing basins and hanging laundry, provides context to the scene without cluttering the visual field. This print is a representative example of the instructional literature that circulated among the merchant and artisan classes during the early 19th century, serving both as an artistic reference and a record of contemporary social habits.

You might also like

The Courtesan (From A Collection of Beautiful Women of the Yoshiwara) - Suzuki Harunobu — Suzuki Harunobu
Sō Shiseki Picture Album - Sō Shiseki — Sō Shiseki

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Goitsu-Picture-Album_-Quick-Practice-for-Beginners_Poster_CompositorV1_1791618000404.jpg?v=1791618494
