grapes-motsurin-joto
Grapes - Motsurin Jōtō

A refined ink painting of grapes by the Japanese Bunjinga artist Motsurin Jōtō, capturing the essence of the subject through fluid, expressive brushwork.

This ink painting by Motsurin Jōtō, also known as Bokusai, displays the characteristic restraint of the Japanese Bunjinga tradition. The work focuses on a cluster of grapes, rendered with fluid, expressive brushwork that prioritises the essence of the subject over strict anatomical accuracy. The artist employs varying tones of ink to suggest the volume of the fruit and the texture of the broad, overlapping leaves. A single, sweeping vine connects the elements, providing a sense of movement across the lower portion of the composition.

The upper section of the paper remains largely empty, a deliberate choice that invites the viewer to contemplate the negative space. This balance between the painted subject and the unadorned surface is a hallmark of the literati style, which sought to express the inner spirit of the artist through minimal means. The inclusion of calligraphy in the upper field adds a rhythmic, visual counterpoint to the organic forms below. The red seals, placed with precision, provide a subtle chromatic contrast to the monochromatic ink palette.

Motsurin Jōtō was a practitioner of the Nanga or Bunjinga school, which drew inspiration from Chinese literati painting. These artists were often scholars or poets who valued personal expression and spontaneity. This piece reflects that philosophy, as the brushstrokes appear effortless yet controlled. The work is mounted in a traditional scroll format, which dictates the vertical orientation and the framing of the image. The muted tones and the focus on natural subjects like grapes were common themes for these artists, who found beauty in the simplicity of the garden and the field. This print captures the subtle gradations of the original ink wash, preserving the delicate interplay of light and shadow that defines the work.

You might also like

Memory of a Voyage - René Magritte — René Magritte
Chrysanthemums - Hokusai School — Hokusai School

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Grapes_Poster_CompositorV1_1791170577895.jpg?v=1791171728
