harvest-helen-frankenthaler
Harvest - Helen Frankenthaler

A 1977 lithograph by Helen Frankenthaler, featuring warm golden and orange tones in an abstract, gestural composition.

Harvest is a lithograph by Helen Frankenthaler, produced in 1977. This work demonstrates the artist's approach to printmaking, where she translated the fluid, spontaneous qualities of her soak-stain painting technique into the medium of lithography. The composition relies on a limited palette of warm, golden yellows and deep, earthy oranges, which evoke the seasonal transition suggested by the title.

Frankenthaler was a central figure in the development of colour field painting. In this print, she allows the ink to sit upon the paper with varying degrees of opacity, creating a sense of depth through layered washes rather than traditional perspective. The marks appear gestural and immediate, reflecting her interest in the physical interaction between the medium and the surface. A thin, vertical line anchors the left side of the image, providing a structural counterpoint to the broader, more atmospheric blocks of colour that dominate the right.

By working with lithographic stones and plates, Frankenthaler maintained the sense of improvisation that defined her career. The print avoids rigid forms, favouring instead an open arrangement that invites the viewer to engage with the interplay of light and pigment. This piece is representative of her later graphic work, where she continued to explore the possibilities of colour relationships and the expressive potential of abstract forms. The work remains a clear example of her ability to balance controlled composition with a sense of organic movement, capturing a specific mood through colour and form alone.

You might also like

Sail I by Sam Francis
Orange, Red, Orange by Mark Rothko

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Harvest_Poster_CompositorV1_1792107946059.jpg?v=1792130890
