haystack-under-a-rainy-sky-vincent-van-gogh
Haystack under a Rainy Sky - Vincent van Gogh

A study of a golden haystack beneath a turbulent, rain-filled sky, rendered with the thick, expressive brushwork characteristic of Vincent van Gogh.

Painted in 1889, this work captures a rural scene near Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. Vincent van Gogh employs his characteristic impasto technique, applying thick layers of oil paint to the canvas to create a tactile, textured surface. The central haystack, rendered in warm ochre and golden tones, provides a stark contrast to the cool, agitated blues of the foreground and the overcast sky above.

The composition is divided into distinct horizontal bands. The foreground features a pool of water or damp earth, depicted with short, rhythmic brushstrokes that suggest movement and reflection. Above this, the haystack sits firmly in the middle ground, its rounded form echoing the rolling hills often seen in the artist's work from this period. The sky is filled with swirling, directional marks that convey the atmospheric pressure of an approaching rainstorm. Small, dark birds are scattered across the upper portion of the canvas, adding a sense of scale and life to the quiet field.

Van Gogh uses colour to define the mood of the piece. The juxtaposition of complementary colours, specifically the yellow of the hay against the blue of the sky and ground, creates a visual tension. This approach to colour theory was a primary concern for the artist during his time in the south of France. The work avoids fine detail in favour of expressive, gestural marks that communicate the immediate sensory experience of the environment. By focusing on the interplay between the heavy, grounded haystack and the fluid, shifting sky, the artist captures a fleeting moment of rural life. The painting remains a clear example of his ability to transform a simple subject into a study of light, texture, and emotional resonance through his unique application of paint.

You might also like

A Farm in Brittany by Paul Gauguin
Boerderij met hooimijt aan de Diemerdijk: met een kudde schapen by Claude Henri Watelet
Vincent van Gogh artwork →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Haystack-under-a-Rainy-Sky_Poster_CompositorV1_1792123881795.jpg?v=1792299239
