The work reflects the influence of Caravaggio, particularly in the application of chiaroscuro. The subject is illuminated by a single, directional light source, which casts deep shadows across the features and creates a sense of volume. The artist focuses on the textures of the skin, the folds of the head covering, and the worn fabric of the garment.

Borgianni spent time in Spain, where he encountered the works of El Greco and other masters. This experience informed his approach to portraiture and religious subjects. In this specific study, the woman is depicted in profile, her gaze directed downward. The palette is restricted to earth tones, ochres, and whites, which allows the artist to concentrate on the play of light and shadow. The brushwork is direct and confident, capturing the physical reality of the subject without unnecessary embellishment. The composition is tight, focusing entirely on the head and shoulders, which draws the viewer into the psychological state of the sitter. This piece is representative of the naturalistic tendencies that emerged in Rome during the early Baroque period, where artists sought to depict human subjects with greater honesty and emotional weight. The lack of a complex background ensures that the viewer remains engaged with the character of the woman, whose weathered face suggests a life of experience. It is a study of form and light, demonstrating the technical ability of an artist who navigated the stylistic shifts of his time with precision.

You might also like

Portrait of Alof de Wignacourt and his Page by Caravaggio
Woman with a Pear by Ferdinand Bol

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Head-of-an-Old-Woman_Poster_CompositorV1_1792124591086.jpg?v=1792286536
