hooked-rug-alexander-calder
Hooked Rug - Alexander Calder

A playful textile design by Alexander Calder, featuring whimsical celestial and animal motifs in a bold, graphic style.

Alexander Calder, widely recognised for his kinetic sculptures and wire figures, also applied his distinct visual language to textile design. This hooked rug demonstrates his interest in playful, biomorphic forms and a primary colour palette. The composition features a collection of celestial and animal motifs, including a winking sun, crescent moons, a striped creature, and a serpent, all arranged against a bold, saturated orange background.

Calder often utilised simple, graphic shapes that evoke a sense of whimsy and spontaneity. His approach to design remained consistent across various media, whether he worked with metal, paint, or fibre. The figures in this piece possess a flat, two-dimensional quality, typical of his graphic work. The contrast between the warm orange ground and the cooler tones of the blue star and black elements creates a balanced visual tension. The inclusion of the initials LSR and CA in the upper right corner suggests a collaborative or commissioned origin, common for his textile projects during this period.

This piece reflects the mid-century interest in bringing artistic expression into domestic spaces through functional objects. Unlike his large-scale mobiles, which rely on movement and air currents, this rug offers a static, tactile experience of his aesthetic. The forms are simplified, almost childlike in their execution, yet they maintain the structural clarity that defines his broader body of work. By translating his sculptural motifs into a textile format, Calder demonstrated the versatility of his visual vocabulary. The rug functions as a graphic field, where the arrangement of symbols invites the viewer to interpret the narrative connections between the sun, the animals, and the celestial bodies. It remains a clear example of how modern artists engaged with craft traditions to expand the reach of their creative practice beyond the gallery walls.

You might also like

Untitled (Geometric Animal Pattern) by Roelf Gerbrands
Hand-Painted Wall by Martin Partyka
Alexander Calder artwork →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Hooked-Rug_Poster_CompositorV1_1792120638279.jpg?v=1792201033
