The work belongs to the tradition of suibokuga, or ink painting, which gained significant traction in Japan through the influence of Chinese Chan Buddhism. The artist employs a monochromatic palette, using varying concentrations of ink to define the forms of the figure and the creature.

The composition focuses on the interaction between the human figure and the carp. The immortal is rendered with fluid, calligraphic brushwork, particularly in the drapery of his robes, which suggests movement and lightness. He holds a scroll, a common attribute for scholars and sages in East Asian iconography. The carp, emerging from stylized waves, is depicted with a degree of detail in its scales and facial features, contrasting with the more ethereal treatment of the surrounding space. The background remains largely empty, a characteristic technique in Japanese ink painting that encourages the viewer to focus on the primary subject.

Kyūseki Tomonobu was active during the Edo period, a time when such themes were popular among the literati and those interested in religious and philosophical subjects. The choice of silk as a support allows for subtle gradations of tone, which the artist uses to create a sense of depth despite the lack of colour. The work reflects the technical skill required to balance the spontaneity of the brush with the controlled representation of mythological figures. It is a representative example of the period's interest in Daoist legends and the aesthetic of simplicity found in ink-based media.

You might also like

Set of Three Hanging Scrolls, Day Dream Plays - Nishimura Shigenaga — Nishimura Shigenaga
Moon amid Clouds - Seisetsu Shūcho — Seisetsu Shūcho

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Hotei-with-Daoist-Immortals_-Immortal-Riding-Carp_Poster_CompositorV1_1791524748348.jpg?v=1791526061
https://www.solisprints.com/products/hotei-with-daoist-immortals-immortal-riding-carp-kyuseki-tomonobu
