i-have-heard-thee-with-the-hearing-of-the-ear-william-blake
I have heard thee with the hearing of the Ear - William Blake

A powerful engraving from William Blake's Illustrations of the Book of Job, depicting the moment of Job's spiritual revelation through precise line work.

This engraving is plate 17 from William Blake's Illustrations of the Book of Job, a series produced between 1823 and 1826. The work depicts the moment of Job's spiritual transformation, where he moves from a theoretical understanding of the divine to a direct, sensory experience of God. Blake employs his characteristic linear style, using precise hatching and cross-hatching to define the figures and the radiant light surrounding the central deity.

The composition is divided into distinct zones. The upper section contains text from the Psalms, while the central image shows the bearded figure of God standing before a kneeling Job and his wife. To the right, other figures are bowed in submission, their forms rendered with heavy, dark drapery that contrasts with the luminosity of the divine presence. The lower portion of the print features further scriptural passages integrated into the design, a hallmark of Blake's approach to combining text and image as a unified whole.

Blake's technical mastery of the copperplate medium is evident in the control of light and shadow. The radiance emanating from the figure of God is achieved through fine, radiating lines that draw the eye toward the centre of the composition. The figures themselves are rendered with a sense of weight and gravity, reflecting the solemnity of the biblical narrative. This print represents the culmination of Blake's long-standing interest in the Book of Job, a subject he explored through various media throughout his career. The work functions as a visual meditation on the nature of faith and the human relationship with the divine, presented with the clarity and discipline of a seasoned printmaker.

You might also like

Christ Descending into the Grave by Luigi Schiavonetti
The Descent of the Holy Spirit and The Healing of the Lame Man by Samuel &
