The work displays his characteristic interest in the interplay of simple geometric forms and colour. Frost often drew inspiration from the coastal environment of Cornwall, translating the movement of light, water, and boats into a vocabulary of shapes. In this composition, elongated, oval-like forms are stacked in a vertical arrangement, suggesting a sense of buoyancy or rhythmic motion against a solid, cool-toned background.

The print relies on a limited palette of turquoise, burnt orange, and black. These shapes are defined by clean, white outlines, which separate the forms from one another and from the background. This technique creates a sense of depth despite the flat application of ink. The composition avoids unnecessary detail, focusing instead on the balance between the positive space of the shapes and the negative space of the surrounding field. Frost's approach to abstraction is rooted in observation, yet he prioritises the formal qualities of the image over literal representation.

Throughout his career, Frost experimented with various printmaking techniques, finding that the medium allowed for a precision and clarity that complemented his geometric style. The screenprint process, with its ability to produce flat, saturated areas of colour, is particularly suited to this design. The work reflects the artist's ability to distil complex visual experiences into a coherent, balanced arrangement. It is a clear example of his mid-career style, where the focus shifted towards a more refined and disciplined use of form and colour. The print remains a representative piece of British abstract art from the 1970s, demonstrating the artist's technical control and his ongoing dialogue with the visual language of modernism.

You might also like

Red and Yellow Image by Patrick Heron
Sun and Sky by Victor Pasmore

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Ice-Blue_Poster_CompositorV1_1792108972275.jpg?v=1792133186
