The work follows the conventions of Yamato-e, a style of Japanese painting characterised by its focus on native subjects and a distinct aesthetic approach to narrative illustration. The composition employs the fukinuki-yatai technique, or blown-off roof, which allows the viewer to observe the interior activities of the courtly figures alongside the exterior garden setting.

The scene depicts a winter garden, where snow-dusted pine trees and a small pond with mandarin ducks provide a seasonal context for the figures. The architectural elements, including the wooden verandas and lattice screens, are rendered with precise lines that define the spatial arrangement of the palace. The figures are dressed in traditional Heian-period attire, with layered robes featuring subtle patterns that reflect the status and refinement of the characters. The colour palette remains balanced, using soft earth tones for the architecture and ground, contrasted by the brighter hues of the garments.

Ryūjo, a female artist active during the late Edo period, demonstrates a mastery of the traditional narrative scroll format. Her work maintains the stylistic continuity of classical Japanese literature illustration while providing a clear, readable depiction of the source material. The inclusion of calligraphic text on the margins frames the visual narrative, integrating the written word with the painted image. This print captures the quiet atmosphere of the scene, focusing on the interplay between the interior domestic space and the natural world outside. The attention to detail in the textile patterns and the architectural structure provides insight into the aesthetic values of the period, offering a glimpse into the visual culture that surrounded the reception of Murasaki Shikibu's classic novel.

You might also like

The Matsukaze Chapter of the Tale of Genji - Chōbunsai Eishi — Hosoda Eishi
The Poet Sōjō Henjō (816–890) Slipping a Letter into a Woman’s Sleeve - Kitagawa Utamaro — Kitagawa Utamaro

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Illustrated-Handscrolls-of-The-Tale-of-Genji_Poster_CompositorV1_1790993129037.jpg?v=1791851839
