This work depicts a quiet moment within a butcher shop, where a customer stands at the threshold while the butcher prepares a cut of meat. The composition relies on the contrast between the bright light entering from the street and the shadowed interior of the shop.

Lhermitte employs a variety of hatching techniques to define the textures of the wooden counter, the hanging carcasses, and the fabric of the women's aprons. His ability to render light through line work is evident in the way the window panes frame the exterior view, drawing the eye toward the interaction between the two figures. The scene avoids sentimentality, focusing instead on the physical reality of the trade and the modest environment of the shop.

As a member of the Société des Peintres-Graveurs, Lhermitte contributed to the revival of etching in the late nineteenth century. His work often documented the vanishing traditions of French village life, providing a record of trades and social structures that were beginning to change under the pressures of industrialisation. This print captures the stillness of a routine transaction, elevated by the artist's technical precision and his observational approach to his subjects. The balance of light and shadow creates a sense of depth, grounding the figures within their workspace. It is a characteristic example of his dedication to documenting the dignity of labour through the graphic arts.

You might also like

Vrouw met manden op de rug by Otto Baron Howen
Liggende jager (Reclining Hunter) by Jan Weissenbruch
More by Léon Augustin Lhermitte →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Interior-of-a-Butcher-Shop_Poster_CompositorV1_1792110590289.jpg?v=1792302515
