It depicts a scene from John Keats's poem, Isabella, or the Pot of Basil, which itself draws from Boccaccio's Decameron. The narrative concerns Isabella, whose brothers murder her lover, Lorenzo. Following his ghostly visitation, she exhumes his head and buries it within a pot of basil, tending to the plant with her own tears.

Hunt focuses on the moment of obsessive devotion. Isabella stands in a white nightdress, her hair loose, leaning against the ceramic vessel. The pot is decorated with skulls, a direct reference to the macabre nature of her secret. The surrounding interior displays the artist's attention to material detail, from the embroidered cloth covering the pedestal to the architectural elements of the room. The basil plant itself is rendered with botanical precision, contrasting with the emotional intensity of the figure.

This painting reflects the Pre-Raphaelite interest in medieval literature and the use of symbolic objects to convey psychological states. Hunt travelled to Italy specifically to find authentic props and settings for the composition, ensuring the decorative elements aligned with his vision of the period. The work demonstrates the characteristic clarity of form and high-chroma palette associated with the movement. By placing the figure in a private, domestic space, Hunt invites the viewer to observe the quiet, singular focus of Isabella's grief. The composition balances the physical reality of the objects with the tragic weight of the subject matter, creating a scene that remains fixed in its narrative moment.

You might also like

La belle Dame Sans Merci by Walter Crane
Cordelia Parting from her Sisters by Ford Madox Brown
William Holman Hunt artwork →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Isabella-and-the-Pot-of-Basil_Poster_CompositorV1_1792125200440.jpg?v=1792292953
