The composition is structured around a central clearing, where figures gather in small groups to trade, socialise, and navigate the space. Horse-drawn carts, laden with goods, serve as the primary transport for the merchants, while the surrounding trees provide a natural canopy for the event. The artist employs pen and ink to define the forms of the people and the architecture of the carts, while grey wash is applied to create depth and shadow across the scene.

Soukens demonstrates a clear interest in the daily activities of the Dutch populace. The figures are rendered with a focus on their varied postures and interactions, reflecting the observational nature of genre art from this period. The trees are depicted with a rhythmic quality, their branches and foliage framing the activity below and drawing the eye toward the distant buildings visible on the horizon. The use of light and shadow is balanced, allowing the viewer to distinguish between the foreground activity and the more atmospheric background.

As a work of the early eighteenth century, this drawing reflects the continuity of Dutch traditions in depicting everyday life. The artist avoids excessive detail in the background, choosing instead to concentrate on the human element of the fair. The ink lines are precise, providing a clear outline for the wash to fill, which adds a sense of volume to the figures and the heavy wooden carts. This piece offers a glimpse into the social and economic rhythms of the time, presented with a focus on clarity and narrative composition.

You might also like

Memory of a Voyage - René Magritte — René Magritte
Portrait of Charles I of England - Anthony van Dyck — Anthony van Dyck

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Jaarmarkt-onder-bomen_Poster_CompositorV1_1790859063377.jpg?v=1790859684
