The work, titled Jacht op wilde zwijnen, depicts a narrative sequence of a hunt. The composition is divided into distinct registers, reminiscent of traditional scroll paintings or relief carvings found in Southeast Asian temple architecture. Stolk employs a graphic, linear style where figures of hunters, animals, and architectural elements are arranged across the paper surface.

The print features a deliberate use of negative space, which allows the individual scenes to breathe while maintaining a sense of rhythmic progression. The figures are rendered with simplified, bold outlines, typical of the woodcut medium. The application of colour is selective, focusing on specific elements such as the hunters, the elephants, and the flora, which creates a visual hierarchy within the busy scenes. The palette consists of primary and secondary hues, applied with a flat quality that avoids tonal modelling.

Stolk's approach to the subject matter demonstrates an interest in the exoticism prevalent in European art of the period. By adopting the stylistic conventions of Eastern narrative art, he creates a work that functions as both a decorative object and a storytelling device. The inclusion of an elephant with a rider, alongside the active scenes of the boar hunt, suggests a synthesis of various cultural motifs. The print is structured with a clear sense of order, despite the density of the imagery. The use of black borders to frame the sections provides a structural anchor for the viewer, guiding the eye through the various stages of the hunt. This piece offers a clear example of the intersection between European printmaking techniques and the influence of global art forms during the interwar years.

You might also like

Robinson - Oskar Kokoschka — Oskar Kokoschka
Komt hier, gy jonge jeugd! - Jacobus Wendel — Jacobus Cornelis Wendel

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Jacht-op-wilde-zwijnen-Wild-Boar-Hunt-_Poster_CompositorV1_1791898180841.jpg?v=1791898347
