jambe-et-chiffres-antoni-tapies
Jambe et chiffres - Antoni Tàpies

A striking lithograph by Antoni Tàpies featuring a bold red form layered over a dense, rhythmic field of handwritten numerals.

Antoni Tàpies, a Catalan artist associated with the Informalism movement, often incorporated signs, symbols, and numerical sequences into his compositions. Jambe et chiffres displays his characteristic approach to mark-making, where the physical act of painting becomes a primary subject. The work features a central, bold red cross-like form that dominates the visual field, layered over a dense field of handwritten numerals. These numbers appear almost like a frantic ledger or a coded message, suggesting a preoccupation with the intersection of human history and abstract geometry.

The composition relies on the contrast between the gestural, aggressive application of red pigment and the more controlled, repetitive nature of the black ink digits. Tàpies frequently utilised such motifs to explore themes of mortality, the body, and the limitations of language. The leg-like shape, implied by the title, introduces a figurative element that disrupts the otherwise abstract arrangement. By combining these disparate visual languages, the artist invites the viewer to consider the relationship between rational systems, such as mathematics, and the raw, visceral reality of human existence.

This print captures the raw energy of Tàpies' later graphic work. The surface is not merely a flat plane but a space where different modes of communication collide. The artist's signature style, which often involved the use of earth tones and textured surfaces, is here distilled into a stark, high-contrast palette. The result is a work that feels both immediate and ancient, reflecting the artist's interest in the material properties of his medium and the symbolic weight of simple, recurring forms. It is a clear example of his ability to imbue minimal visual elements with a sense of urgency and physical presence.

You might also like

Untitled (from Poèmes d'Eugenio Montale) by Gerard Schneider
Untitled (T1982-H12) by Hans Hartung

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Jambe-et-chiffres_Poster_CompositorV1_1792113994021.jpg?v=1792133900
