Jean-Honore Fragonard captures the Abbot in a relaxed, informal pose, which deviates from the rigid formality often associated with portraiture of the period. The subject wears a red coat and a feathered hat, suggesting a costume or a theatrical element that aligns with the playful nature of the Rococo style.

Fragonard employs a loose, fluid brushwork technique. The application of paint is rapid and confident, creating a sense of immediacy and spontaneity. The light plays across the fabric of the coat and the features of the sitter, drawing attention to the expressive quality of the face. The background remains relatively indistinct, allowing the figure to occupy the visual space without distraction. This approach reflects the artist's ability to balance observation with a decorative sensibility.

The Abbot of Saint-Non was a patron and an amateur engraver who travelled extensively in Italy with Fragonard. Their friendship provided the context for this work, which likely served as a personal memento of their shared experiences. The composition avoids the heavy symbolism found in state portraits, opting instead for a character study that feels intimate and personal. The palette, dominated by warm tones and the striking red of the garment, provides a sense of energy and warmth. This print reproduces the textures of the original oil painting, preserving the visible brushstrokes and the specific handling of light that defines Fragonard's approach to the human form. It is a representative example of the artist's later work, where his technique became increasingly free and experimental.

You might also like

Portrait of the Artist's Daughter by François Boucher
Portrait of a Young Woman - Louise Elisabeth Vigée Le Brun by Élisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun
Jean-Honoré Fragonard prints →

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Jean-Claude-Richard-Abbot-of-Saint-Non_Poster_CompositorV1_1792125014987.jpg?v=1792291557
