jeanne-spring-edouard-manet-1
Jeanne (Spring) - Edouard Manet

An original etching by Edouard Manet featuring the actress Jeanne Demarsy, published in the Gazette des Beaux-Arts in 1882.

This etching, titled Jeanne, depicts the actress Jeanne Demarsy, who also served as the model for Manet's final major oil painting, Le Printemps (Spring). Produced in 1882, the work captures the artist's late-career interest in the modern Parisian woman. Manet employs a direct, economical line to define the subject, who is shown in profile, wearing a floral-trimmed hat and carrying a parasol. The background is suggested through quick, hatched marks, which provide a sense of outdoor atmosphere without the need for detailed rendering.

Manet was a key figure in the transition from Realism to Impressionism. While he is often associated with the latter group, he maintained a distinct approach to printmaking. His etchings often rely on strong contrasts and a simplified graphic language. This specific print was published in the Gazette des Beaux-Arts, a prominent French art journal of the period. The inclusion of the artist's signature in the lower left corner and the publication details at the base confirm its status as an original print intended for a wider audience of collectors and art enthusiasts.

The composition focuses on the silhouette of the model, using the parasol as a diagonal element to guide the viewer's eye. The texture of the clothing and the foliage behind the figure are rendered with varied line weights, demonstrating Manet's technical proficiency with the etching needle. This piece offers a glimpse into the artist's working method, where he distilled complex visual information into a series of deliberate, expressive marks. It remains a representative example of his graphic work, showing his ability to capture character and contemporary fashion with minimal means.

You might also like

The Milliner by Pierre-Auguste Renoir
Mademoiselle Pois Vert by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Jeanne-Spring-_Poster_CompositorV1_1792117729905.jpg?v=1792396778
