Painted around 1781, the work captures the subject in a characteristic style of the period, favouring a fluid application of paint and a focus on the sitter's personality. Merlin, known for his mechanical ingenuity and his role in the development of the pianoforte, is presented here with a thoughtful expression.

Gainsborough employs his signature brushwork, which is light and feathery, to define the textures of the subject's clothing and the powdered wig. The striking red coat provides a bold contrast against the dark, atmospheric background, a technique Gainsborough often used to draw attention to the face. The sitter's hands are positioned with care, suggesting a sense of refinement and intellectual engagement.

Unlike the more formal, rigid portraiture of his contemporaries, Gainsborough brings a sense of immediacy to this image. The composition is focused entirely on the individual, stripping away extraneous details to allow the character of the inventor to emerge. The play of light across the face and the delicate lace at the cuffs demonstrate the artist's technical skill in handling oil paint. This piece remains a fine example of eighteenth-century British portraiture, reflecting the artist's ability to balance formal requirements with a more personal, painterly approach. The portrait is currently held in the collection of the Iveagh Bequest at Kenwood House in London.

<div style="margin-top:2rem;padding-top:1.5rem;border-top:1px solid
