The composition centres on a modest farmhouse with a thatched roof, rendered with precise, rhythmic lines that define the textures of brickwork, timber, and foliage. A young boy stands in the foreground, holding a hoop, while a small group of chickens occupies the dirt path nearby. The inclusion of a gnarled, leafless tree adds a sense of seasonal atmosphere to the setting.

Schouten employs a varied line weight to create depth and shadow, particularly in the dark recesses of the doorway and the dense hatching used for the roof. The scene is framed by a rustic fence and a small body of water, elements that ground the architecture within its environment. The work includes a formal dedication at the bottom, inscribed in French to Colonel M.J. De Man, marking a twenty-fifth wedding anniversary. This detail provides insight into the social function of such prints, which were often produced as personal gifts or tokens of esteem among the professional classes of the period.

The artist demonstrates a clear command of the etching needle, using cross-hatching to build volume and tonal contrast without relying on heavy ink washes. The perspective is straightforward, inviting the viewer to observe the domestic details of the farmstead. By focusing on a mundane moment of childhood play, the print reflects the broader interest in genre subjects that characterised the era. It remains a fine example of the technical skill applied to small-scale, commemorative works during the early nineteenth century.

You might also like

Anatomische les - David van der Kellen — David van der Kellen
Zware tijden (een keizerprent) - Marius Bauer — Marius Bauer

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Jongen-met-hoepel-bij-een-boerderij_Poster_CompositorV1_1791778044597.jpg?v=1791778633
