jongenshoofd-head-of-a-boy-mondhare-jean
Jongenshoofd (Head of a Boy) - Mondhare & Jean

A refined eighteenth-century French engraving depicting the head of a young boy, rendered with precise cross-hatching and classical attention to form.

This fine art print reproduces a study of a young boy, a subject frequently explored in late eighteenth-century French graphic arts. The work, published by the Parisian firm Mondhare & Jean, demonstrates the technical precision typical of the period. The artist employs a combination of etching and engraving to define the soft contours of the face and the curls of the hair. The shading is achieved through controlled cross-hatching, which provides a sense of volume and depth to the features. The boy is depicted with a direct, engaging gaze, his head slightly turned to capture a naturalistic expression.

Such prints were often produced as instructional models for students of drawing or as decorative items for the domestic interior. The composition is clean and focused, stripping away extraneous background details to concentrate entirely on the anatomical accuracy and the subtle play of light across the skin. The firm of Mondhare & Jean was active in Paris during the latter half of the eighteenth century, known for their output of prints that catered to the growing demand for accessible, high-quality imagery. This specific piece reflects the Neoclassical interest in clarity, order, and the study of human form. The paper retains the original plate marks, indicating the care taken in the printing process. The monochrome palette allows the viewer to appreciate the draughtsmanship and the delicate tonal transitions that define the boy's youthful appearance. This print is a representative example of the commercial print market in pre-revolutionary France, where technical skill and aesthetic refinement were highly valued by collectors and practitioners alike.

You might also like

Neo-classical Vases in a Landscape - Jean Charles Delafosse — Jean Charles Delafosse
A Grecian Lovely - John William Godward — John William Godward

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Jongenshoofd-Head-of-a-Boy-_Poster_CompositorV1_1791876714042.jpg?v=1791876908
