kannon-in-a-bamboo-grove-amano-hoko
Kannon in a Bamboo Grove - Amano Hōko

A serene ink-on-silk hanging scroll depicting the Bodhisattva Kannon seated within a bamboo grove, executed by the Japanese artist Amano Hōko.

This hanging scroll depicts the Bodhisattva Kannon, a figure of compassion in Buddhist tradition, seated in a meditative posture upon a craggy rock formation. The artist, Amano Hōko, employs a monochromatic ink palette on silk to evoke a sense of quietude and spiritual focus. The figure of Kannon is rendered with delicate, flowing lines, contrasting with the more vigorous, textured brushwork used to define the surrounding bamboo grove and the weathered stone base.

A luminous circular halo frames the head of the deity, providing a soft light that separates the figure from the dense, dark foliage of the bamboo. The bamboo stalks rise vertically behind the subject, creating a sense of depth and enclosure. The composition follows traditional East Asian iconographic conventions, where the bamboo serves as a symbol of resilience and flexibility. The inclusion of calligraphic inscriptions in the upper right quadrant provides context and scholarly weight to the work, a common feature in Japanese literati-style painting.

Amano Hōko, active during the late Edo period, demonstrates a mastery of ink wash techniques. The varying density of the ink allows for subtle gradations of tone, from the deep blacks of the bamboo leaves to the pale, ethereal wash of the background. The work avoids unnecessary ornamentation, focusing instead on the balance between the human form and the natural environment. This piece reflects the period's interest in religious themes combined with the refined aesthetics of ink painting. The scroll format itself is integral to the viewing experience, designed to be displayed in a tokonoma or similar space, allowing the viewer to engage with the image in a contemplative manner. The preservation of the silk surface maintains the integrity of the original brushstrokes, offering a clear view of the artist's technical precision.

You might also like

Brown-Eared Bulbul (Hiyodori) on a Branch of Plum - Kano Shōei — Kanō Shōei
Hawk on a Pine - Kano Yukinobu — Kiyohara Yukinobu

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0833/9292/1935/files/Kannon-in-a-Bamboo-Grove_Poster_CompositorV1_1791423355606.jpg?v=1791423826
